CHALLENGE 4

SUMMARY OF CHALLENGE:

NAME OF CHALLENGE: Challenge 4: RX
DATE: June 2, 2011
WRITTEN BY: Angelyn
SUMMARY: Our team had a hard time on this challenge. We mostly had a hard time finding out what disease the patient had.
But all and all, our team pulled through another challenge yet again.

MEDICAL CHART:

PATIENT'S NAME:Elvis Praisley
SYMPTOMS:wheezing, coughing up thick yellow mucus, fever, nausea, and chest pain.
DIAGNOSIS: (WHAT IS THE HEALTH ISSUE? DESCRIBE WHAT THE ILLNESS IS) Bronchitis(chronic.)It has longer lasting symptoms. Bronchial tubes get red and swollen. The most common cause is smoking.
TREATMENT: (WHAT SHOULD THE PATIENT DO?)We would advise the patient to stop smoking. Smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis.
PROGNOSIS: (WHAT IS THE OUTLOOK FOR THIS PATIENT? WILL HE/SHE GET BETTER? WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE AS A DOCTOR?)People who have chronic bronchitis have more bacteria infections on the airways and lungs. Some people are even permanently infected with bacteria in the airways.

LEADER REFLECTION: (VIDEO TO BE INSERTED HERE) 1. In this challenge, my team had to decide what disease our patient had, according to the symptoms that they told us.

2. Our tribe was successful with sharing what we thought the disease was.
3. It did not work as well when we were deciding which disease our patient, Elvis Praisley, had. We eliminated asthma, but then we thought both cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis matched Elvis' symptoms.
4. In our tribe, Hudson and I researched asthma, and Divya researched cystic fibrosis and both chronic and acute bronchitis. Since we all knew prety well about what we researched, we knew if our disease mathed our patient's symptoms.
5. In my opinion, the best part of the whole project was listening to the patient and exploring with our ideas thinking whether or not they had this certain disease. This is a great project because we could actually experience what it would be like if you were a real doctor. If there could be something that could be improved, it would be more symptoms so we could figure out the disease more easily.

CHALLENGE 3

SUMMARY OF CHALLENGE:

NAME OF CHALLENGE: Your gross and cool body

DATE: 4/14/11
WRITTEN BY: DR.Hudson
SUMMARY: In this challenge, our group watched a slide show all about the lungs. It was successful.
I, myself had to watch the slide and then find a list of vocabulary words such as the ones below. Those words have to do with the respiratory system.

VOCABULARY WORDS: Lungs-Organs that bring oxygen into the body and remove waste gases

Blood-Fluid that carries food and oxygen to cells of the body
Respiration-the process by which organisms get and use oxygen
Respiratory system-The group of organs that bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide

EXPLORE MORE ASSIGNMENTS:

CHALLENGE 3 --EXPLORE MORE: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
YOUR TRIBE: Heavy Breathers
YOUR NAME: Dr.Divya

LIST AT LEAST FIVE IMPORTANT FACTS YOU LEARNED ABOUT THE RESPIRATORY BELOW. USE BULLET POINTS.
● The main job of the respitory system is to provide the body with oxygen from the air.
● Breathing pushes carbon dioxide out of the body.
● The cells of your body need oxygen to break food down, releasing the energy.
● In this process ,carbon dioxide is formed into gas.
Each cells needs food and oxygento live.
LIST AT LEAST 3 ‘FACTOIDS’ ABOUT THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM BELOW. USE BULLET POINTS.
  • Your lungs contain almost 1500 miles of nairways and over 300 million alveoli.
  • Every minute youn breathe in 13 pints of air.]
  • Plants are our partners in breathing. We breathe in air, use the oxygen in it, and release carbon dioxside. Plants take in carbon dioxside and realse oxygen.

Five Facts
  • Humans and many other animals take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide by breathing. The lungs are the body parts used for breathing.
  • Many animals that live in water, such as fish, have gills instead of lungs.
  • A gill has a thin wall that lets in oxygen from the water that passes through the gill.
  • Respiration also involves getting rid of carbon dioxide.
  • Carbon dioxide is a gas that is made when living things use oxygen.

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION:

  • Rib cage (made of 12 sets of ribs) protects lung
  • Cilia (tiny hairs in your nose) help catch and remove larger particles such as dirt and pollen that do not get trapped in the mucus
  • Air flows through the trachea (the trachea runs down the center on the front part of your neck. It is 3.9 to 4.7 inches or 10 to 12 cm long) on its ways to the lungs
  • Cigarette smokes break the thin walls of your alveoli. When alveoli are destroyed, you get less oxygen into your body. Cigarette smokers have more than twice the risk as a heart attack as people who do not smoke. It can shorten your life by ten years or more, it makes your teeth yellow, and it makes your breath smell bad. They get more colds, more flus, more bronchitis, and more pneumonia.
  • When someone has an asthma attack, the airways in the lungs become more narrower and clogged up with mucus. It becomes harder to breath, and it may even hurt to try. It can also cause sharp pains in the chest. One way to treat asthma is to take special medicine to open up the airways in the lungs.

LEADER REFLECTION: During this challenge, my group really had to work together. We had to each work on something individually. Hudson had to do the Vocabulary assignment, Divya did both Explore More assignments, and I did the Critical Thinking Question and the Leader Reflection. We each had to work really hard as individuals. All of our assignments were pretty hard. Divya's was hard because she had to do two assignments.

Challenge 2:

Name of Challenge: Who Are You?
Today's Date: March 31,2011
Writer: Angelyn
Summary of Challenge: In this challenge, we made badges and worked together as a team. There were some difficulties along the way. For example, our team had a little bit of trouble resizing the badges. Picking the color was also hard because we didn't know which was the exact color. Also, choosing the hospital, university, and special skills were a little tricky. It took more time than anything else. But still, we all enjoyed and liked this challenge a lot!!!

LEADER'S REFLECTION: I think in this challenge my group worked cooperatively. During this challenge there were some difficulties but we all got through them. One of the difficulties was when we picked our team name. But we also enjoyed making our badges. I was impressed with my group when we finished everything. And I also think they should be proud of themselves too!!!
